Job Overview We are seeking a new Lead HVAC Mechanical Engineer to join our team at Ardmore Roderick. As a Lead HVAC Mechanical Engineer, you join a team of infrastructure solutions experts working to solve our client’s ever evolving project needs. This opportunity can be located in either our Chicago or Downers Grove locations and could have potential to be hybrid depending on the specific client, project and team needs.
Key Responsibilities
Serve as mechanical lead from concept through construction closeout, owning HVAC scope, schedule and deliverables with minimal oversight
Lead the full HVAC design scope on projects, including permit drawings, load calculations, COMcheck documentation and construction administration
Develop HVAC drawings and BIM models using Revit and AutoCAD; coordinate integration with architectural, structural and electrical disciplines
Review designs for compliance with the City of Chicago Building Code, Illinois codes and relevant standards (ASHRAE 90.1, 62.1, 55, 15; IMC; NFPA; IECC; SMACNA)
Provide sealed technical documentation for submittals to permitting authorities
Interface directly with clients, architects, and contractors to present and defend design decisions
Lead mechanical coordination meetings and resolve cross-discipline conflicts
Conduct field visits for surveys, installation reviews, system troubleshooting and commissioning support
Apply controls and BAS integration knowledge to ensure proper system functionality
Perform energy modeling and support compliance with energy codes and ASHRAE 90.1 requirements
Support budgeting, estimating, and proposal development for mechanical scopes, including writing technical content for pursuits
Develop and enforce mechanical design standards, templates and QA/QC processes for the team
Mentor junior staff and support overall team growth
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering
Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in Illinois
Minimum of seven years of experience in HVAC mechanical engineering design, with demonstrated ability to independently lead projects
Strong working knowledge of the City of Chicago Building Code, Illinois Plumbing Code, Illinois Energy Conservation Code, ASHRAE standards, IMC, NFPA, IECC, SMACNA and LEED guidelines
Experience with COMcheck and energy code compliance documentation
Experience preparing and reviewing permit documents for the City of Chicago Department of Buildings and other Illinois authorities having jurisdiction
Proficiency with Revit and AutoCAD for mechanical design
Familiarity with Autodesk Construction Cloud or similar project collaboration platforms
Experience with Carrier HAP or equivalent load calculation software
Proficiency in Bluebeam Revu for markups and collaboration
Proficiency in Microsoft Office
Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with proven ability to lead client discussions and coordinate across disciplines
Strong organizational skills with ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines
Project experience across sectors such as residential, public-sector, higher ed, industrial or mission-critical
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree in mechanical engineering or related discipline
Permit experience outside Illinois, with knowledge of regional code variations and ability to adapt designs to local requirements
Plumbing system design (domestic water, sanitary, storm) and coordination with fire protection systems
Working knowledge of electrical systems and how they integrate with mechanical and plumbing equipment (power requirements, controls, coordination)
Field experience with system installation, BAS integration, troubleshooting, or commissioning
Experience mentoring junior engineers

Salary Range: $149,760-174,720, Ardmore Roderick is providing the compensation range that the company believes it might pay and/or offer for this position, based on the successful applicant’s education, experience, knowledge, skills and abilities in addition to internal equity and specific geographic location.
