Ardmore Roderick is seeking a senior designer with specific transmission and substation physical design experience to work on projects based out of our Chicago, IL Office.

As a senior designer, you will work with a team of engineers and designers to gather information for design projects, participate and support walkdowns at client facilities, interface with vendors and construction contractors and develop complete design packages. You will be expected to take the lead on various engineering design projects across multiple disciplines.

In this role, you will be expected to develop physical layout drawings, accurately incorporate field and survey data into drawings, and participate in the coordination of design details for all aspects of an integrated design. You are also expected to provide support and guidance to other designers and project team members.

The successful candidate must demonstrate the following minimum qualifications:

  • An associate degree in Computer Aided Design (or similar advanced degree)
    • A high school diploma is acceptable if accompanied with 7 or more years drafting technical experience
  • Advanced drafting experience using standard computer drafting tools (i.e. AutoCAD or MicroStation)
  • Ability to visualize parts in 3D without the aid of the computer
  • 7+ years of detailed design experience in the development of the below transmission and substation design deliverables:
    • General Arrangement Drawings
    • Electrical Equipment and Component Drawings
    • Transmission & Substation Section Views (Elevations)
    • Transmission Line Route Drawings
    • Substation Detailed Bill of Material
    • Substation Lightning Stroke Shielding Plan
    • Substation Grounding Plan
    • Electrical Connection and Grounding Details
    • Cable and Conduit Raceways and route plans
    • Underground Transmission Plan and Profile Drawings
    • Control Building Equipment, Cable Tray, and Lighting
  • Interpreting and incorporating vendor information into design deliverables
  • Researching, deciphering, and applying client technical and design standards
  • Perform field walkdowns and data gathering at client facilities to incorporate into designs.
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to less experienced drafters and designers in the use of drafting tools.

Other valued qualifications include:         

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution
  • Engineer in Training or Engineering Intern License (EIT/EI)
  • Experience with the National Electric Safety Code
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong time management skills
  • Ability to work independently
